Matera is a city perched not only on top of these incredible cave dwellings, but also above a dramatic ravine, with sweeping views over the landscape. Although there are buildings in ruins still, the city is vibrant with life and culture as many structures have been restored into beautiful cave hotels and restaurants. The time spent in Matera will be a walking tour with stops at Museo Casa Grotta, a renovated cave with period artifacts that gives the visitor a great sense of what life was like before its citizens were relocated out of the Sassi in the 1950s. Looking like igloos, constructed out of pure stone, the beehive-shape structures, have origins that dates back to the 15th century and maybe older. The trulli, found nowhere else in the world, are built of local limestone.
