Spring Bears and Whales Tour in Campbell River
This unique Spring Bear and Whale Watching Tour includes lunch and offers something for everyone! Springtime in British Columbia is a time of waking up and preparing for the summer ahead. This holds especially true for Black Bears (mɛxaɬ). After long winter months of hibernating, the black bears must replenish their fat reserves in preparation for breeding. We often find them at the water’s edge foraging on rocky beaches for shellfish and sedge grasses. At the same time, Humpback and Orca Whales are returning to the Salish Sea from more tropical climates, where they migrated last fall to give birth and mate over the winter. The West Coast Bigg’s Killer Whales add to the diverse mix of marine wildlife in their ongoing search for the seals, dolphins and porpoises that make up their diet. A seasoned skipper and experienced naturalist share their knowledge in searching for black bears, whales and all the abundant birds and wildlife surrounding us.

Vancouver Island: Full-Day Grizzly Bear Tour at Toba Inlet
Your expedition begins at our Campbell River marina, where you'll board our comfortable covered vessel, complete with a heated cabin and onboard washroom. The 2.5-hour journey to Toba Inlet is a marine wildlife experience in itself, as our expert naturalist guides provide commentary and we keep a lookout for whales, dolphins, and sea lions along the way. You'll enter Toba Inlet, a remote fjord of towering mountains, stunning jade-green glacial waters, and cascading waterfalls. Once we arrive at the bear viewing location, you'll enjoy an included lunch on the dock before being greeted by your Indigenous guides from the Klahoose First Nation. You'll then board a van to travel along the inlet's rivers, arriving at viewing platforms. Here, you will safely observe grizzly bears catching salmon during the annual run. After approximately 3 hours of immersive bear viewing, you'll return to our boat for the journey home, with more time to spot whales and enjoy the coastal scenery.

Shortly after departing, we will travel through prime feeding grounds of migratory Humpback Whales. Encounters are likely and plentiful. These giants can weigh over 60 tons! Clans of Transient Orca are constantly on the move, often spending long periods of time foraging throughout the endless shorelines and Coast Mountain fjords. In their search of prey such as harbour seals, sea lions and porpoises, we have the chance to encounter and witness the skill and intelligence of these incredible animals thrive in their vast ocean world. The Discovery Islands interconnected waterways have world renowned tidal rapids that create an abundance of nutrients. Steller sea lions feeding by the dozen, Harbour Seals, Pacific white-sided dolphins and large congregations of Bald Eagles and gulls take part in the ebb and flow.

See why Campbell River is quickly becoming known as a whale watching hotspot on Vancouver Island. This is our most popular family-friendly tour, and takes place on our fun and stable zodiac vessels. We cruise throughout the Salish Sea and Desolation Sound in search of the biggest and most exciting marine mammals that call this region home. During our four hour tours we provide light snacks and refreshments. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to stop for breaks at interesting and historical sites in this beautiful area. Tour departs from our Campbell River Marine Adventure Centre at the Discovery Harbour Shopping Centre.
